Why grass is green ?
My students once were preparing speech for an upcoming competition.in order to get feedback about their preparation they were requesting me to listen their speech. They all were very talented and outstanding. But when it comes to effectiveness of speech I told them follow certain rules which a legendery stage actor and my trainer gave me. The rules are --"don't give speech as speech as speeches are boring. Make it effective through stories as stories are interesting. If you can't find story then create your own story. Speech which is enhanced with story is always interestin and outstanding "
I can't forget this trainer. He was the one who once told me to give a speech on the topic ----''why grass is green?"
Let me take you few years back when BPO'S jobs were becoming trend among youngsters. It was new source of earning good amount without a degree. The top three BPO'S during that time were IBMDaksh,JPMorgan, and Azeem Premji's WIPRO.☺
It was summer break of early 2000. I too wanted an experience in international BPO just for fun. I gave an interview in Wipro . The interview was successful and out of 10 candidates recruiters selected only me for the upcoming training of voice and accent before appointing me.Such courses were generally very expensive. But my course was sponsored by the company so I didn't pay anything. The training was starting fròm the very next day. I took the address for training centre and left.
The next day in training room I met fifteen more candidates including me.After sometime the trainer entered in the room. He introduced himself. His name was Leandro Da'silva. He was stage actor with a very nice voice.he gave the importance of the training in various field. He said that it was tough training which requires lot of tongue movement and use of lower jaws.he wished us good luck for next ten days of training. And the training started.
We did lot of tongue twisting.continous jaw movement caused lot of pain in lower jaw.
First five days trainer focused completely on converting our local accent into neutral accent for global calls. Last five days he gave us various topics for extempo speech. It was during these last five days he instructed us to create stories, think outer of box. Make your speech interesting. These last days were making us mad. Lot of rubbish stories were created by the pathetic topics. But in the end there was lot of difference in everbody's thinking.
After the tenth day when the training was over we all gathered in the room from their we were taken to powai in Wipro office.there we went for the final round of voice and accent test. We all entered in the hall of wipro. One by one everyone went for the voice test.finally my turn came and I went in the voice room for test . introduction was over and the recruiter gave me an extempo topic. I must tell if this topic was given ten days ago than I could have been eliminated. But thanks to the trainers and their training now I was ready for it . the topic was "why. ......grass. .......is. .......Green?
I took a deep breathe, paused for 90 seconds and started
" grass is a part of nature so it deserve a colour. It can't be colourless as that right is already taken by water. It can't be brown as it will create confusion among herbivores to select their food. God asked sun which colour should be given to grass. sun demanded green color so that sun rays can get access to this living planet and nurture all life. So god gifted grass green color through a pigment called chlorophyll. That is why grass. ...is.....green?"
Through this reply I got offer letter for No.3 BPO Wipro.I was selected for UK process as front office executive.
This job of summer break changed my life forever. I have a neutral accent and I use the out of box theory of thinking in teaching.
My poetry is dedicated to the topic given by my trainer Mr.leandro da'silva whom we used to call Lee.he is a stage actor and a very talented trainer..The title of my poem is Albeli Ghaas means grass.

Magha main agnisamarpit ho jati
Phalgun ki holi main mahua sang pisti
Chaitra ki garmI ki makhmali aas
Baisaakh main anna sang jhumati hai ghaas
Jeth ki loo main sheetal dhara de
Asaadh ki boondon ko moti bana de
Sawaan ke malhaar main karti hai raas
Bhado tak jal grahan karti hai ghaas
Ashvin main randhron se umas failaati
Kartik tak khud jalviheen reh jaati
Paus tak sukhkar kare angithi main pravaas
Aagaz se anjaam tak hai jeevandayani ghaas
